Nice work!

Oh yeah, and I always knew Danny Darwin as "Dr. Death" growing up an Astros fan in the 80s. I have no idea how he got it, but it easily has to be one of the greatest nicknames ever.

PS- Similar to Eddie Matthews, Nellie Fox played with Houston from 1964-65 and then was a coach with the team from '65-'67. Most notably during this time, Fox served as a mentor to a young Joe Morgan, helping groom the prospect in to a perrenial All-Star.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31467474.post-67491849719036605072009-01-06T17:55:00.000-08:002009-01-06T17:55:00.000-08:00A fantastic, fantastic stroll down memory lane. B...A fantastic, fantastic stroll down memory lane. But I have to think the homegrown team wins, and in traditional Astros fashion, by a 2-1 or 1-0 score that takes 4 hours to play. The west coast games will be already in the 7th or 8th by the time the last out is recorded in the Astrominutemaidenrondome.

This just made my whole winter.Martin Hajovskyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14087389972723306522noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31467474.post-63972901079011379812009-01-05T15:30:00.000-08:002009-01-05T15:30:00.000-08:00Actually, Moises Alou tore up his knee sliding int...Actually, Moises Alou tore up his knee sliding into second base during a 1999 spring training game. He was a week or two away from returning to the active roster in August when the treadmill accident occurred.

I concur that if Carlos Beltran is on this list, Randy Johnson should also be on this list. And, yes, you're right, we did want Beltran back. But he and his agent were extremely disingenuous with Astros management during Beltran's free-agent contract discussions. The Astros clearly expressed a strong interest in signing Beltran, but the Astros were strung along by Beltran's agent, even to the point that the Mets and Yankees were allowed visits with the player while the Astros, the player's most recent team, were not. Where he would wind up signing is Carlos' decision, but the lack of forthrightness toward the Astros is the reason he is still booed at Minute Maid Park, even though four seasons have past since he signed with the Mets.

There has been a bit of poetic justice with Beltran. In 2005, the Mets did not make the playoffs; the Astros won the pennant and played in their first World Series. In 2006, the Mets had a chance in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull out Game 7 of the NLCS against the Cardinals; Beltran looked at an "Uncle Charlie" with the bases loaded, and the Mets missed out on the World Series. In 2007 and 2008, the Mets choked down the stretch and missed the playoffs each of those years with a loss at home to the lowly Marlins coupled with a win by another contender on the final day. I don't wish that on anybody; as you mentioned, we Astros fans have had our share of heartbreak. But in Beltran's case, that string of futility couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31467474.post-26482594802359906932009-01-05T14:22:00.000-08:002009-01-05T14:22:00.000-08:00Great list...I tried to argue with it, but it is p...Great list...I tried to argue with it, but it is pretty close to the list I would have generated...I'd probably put Jose Valverde in the Acquired pen, though, even though he's only been there one year...It would have also been nice to put Kenny Lofton on the home grown team, but alas, that trade for Eddie Taubensee and Willie Blair meant that all his glory was elsewhere...and Joe Morgan was BOTH home grown and Acquired, so I'd start him at 2B on both lists... :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31467474.post-62540008342971981832009-01-04T09:59:00.000-08:002009-01-04T09:59:00.000-08:00Dr. Death saved a fans life when he was with the R...Dr. Death saved a fans life when he was with the Rangers if I remember correctly.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31467474.post-25696052518263391952009-01-04T05:21:00.000-08:002009-01-04T05:21:00.000-08:00as a kid growing up an Astros fan in Chicago (not ...as a kid growing up an Astros fan in Chicago (not sure how that happened), i watched Astros games on WGN, WOR and TBS and i definitely recall Bonham Bullet used to refer to Danny Darwin

and i vaguely recall Dr Death. i always attributed that to incidents like 1) throwing a pitch behind Dave Parker's head, taking a couple steps TOWARDS the plate when The Cobra glared at him and inciting Parker to charge him and 2) telling Nolan Ryan (to his face) to stop being a crybaby for whining to reporters about run support during his 8-16 2.76 ERA league leading 1987 campaign.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31467474.post-31933075147397008172009-01-04T03:11:00.000-08:002009-01-04T03:11:00.000-08:00Great article, Sully.
