A pitcher throwing nice and easy with a lead may be able to throw 140 pitches especially once you're deeper in the season. Another pitcher may be laboring after 4 innings and 90 pitches where he constantly is falling behind the batters. IMO, it is more important to watch the pitcher and see if he is altering his delivery.
