Don't get cocky, Red Sox fans
There are 103 other names on that supposedly sealed group of positive tests.
And as much as we'd like to single out A-Rod...
And as much as we'd like to think the other 103 names are Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Aaron Boone, Paul O'Neill, Bucky Dent, Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig etc odds are a few Red Sox players are on there as well.
And chances are some Red Sox that WE really love!
So when you boo A-Roid this year, be prepared for some of the members of our beloved 2004 squad to have their names dragged into it.
And also there are so many other reasons to boo A-Rod.
Let's focus on him being an overpaid, wife cheating, Arroyo wrist slapping, Ringless big game choke artist!
You have a good point that all fans should keep in mind. We probably all have a player or two that we would hate to see named in one of these stories. Personally, I'd hate to see Thome's name linked to a positive test as he is my kids favorite player.
ReplyDeleteAs far as A-Rod goes I can't say I'm all that surprised. Canseco named him and anyone who played in Texas was exposed to the culture. I'm not excusing his usage (okay, alleged), but I can see how a young player (23, 24?) could believe an established player who tells him that everyone is doing it, blah, blah, blah. Looks like he used when baseball wasn't taking steroids seriously. When baseball started taking it serious so did he.
Thanks for inserting some perspective into the situation. The funny/sad thing will be how fans (from *any* city) will attempt to rationalize the steroid use of their favorite player if he gets named.
ReplyDeleteAn example (for illustrative purposes only): Edgar Martinez used steroids? But he's such a great role model! He must have taken a 'medicinal' form of steroids to keep from getting hurt - after all he worked so hard at his craft. The guy's just a gamer who did what he had to do - totally different than those serial killers Bonds, A-Rod and McGuire.
the red sox *knowingly* signed a player with a history of steroid use (gagne), so i don't really understand red sox nation's massive wave of schadenfreude right now.
ReplyDeleteCome on... the difference between the face of the franchise and a guy who was a mop up man for the '07 Sox.
ReplyDeleteThat being said... there are plenty of Red sox who probably used
