I saw today that the Cardinals beat up the Pirates, 14-7.
In fact I had to check to see if it was Cardinals-Pirates or a preseason Rams-Steelers game.
That was the 8th loss in a row for the Pirates, who ceased to be a major league team in my eyes, and I thought "Man, the Pirates must be close to the Nationals! The Pirates might wind up being the worst team in baseball!"
Don't worry, Nationals fans... that honor is still securely yours, as will in all likely hood the #1 pick in the 2010 draft.
You will forgive me if the day to day ins and outs of the Washington Nationals escape me. I am guessing the ins and outs of Nationals baseball slip the mind of manager Jim Riggleman at times!
But while the Pirates were losing 8 straight, the Nationals were losing 7 in a row themselves as they remain on pace to be a 106 loss team.
Doesn't it seem like every time you turn around, the Nationals have lost 5 in a row?
This is their THIRD 7 game losing streak this year!
They started the year 0-7 and began May with a 5-17 record.
They had a 6 game losing streak to end May and between May 15th and June 16th the Nats lost 24 out of 29 games.
Between June 21st and July 20th they lost 19 out of 24 games.
And since their out of nowhere 8 game winning streak in early August, they have lost 16 out of 22 games.
That is a sucky consistency month after month that you almost have to salute.
All I have to say to Washington management... pick wisely!
As for the Pirates? Have fun screwing up that #2 or #3 pick
