Forget winning the Division... will the Pirates win another GAME?

Look, the Pirates winning the NL Central was always a bit of a long shot. Even on July 19th when they were in first place by themselves, the chances of them holding on to that lead were slim.

But even the most realistic Pirate fan would have had a hard time imagining this fiasco.

They've lost 10 of their past 11 games. Yeah that included some tight games, including the 19 inning fiasco. But they've only one once since then.

And win loss records don't reflect close games. Just wins and losses.

Since they went on this brutal stretch against the Cardinals, Braves and Phillies, the home series against the lowly Cubs and Padres were supposed to be a chance to catch their breath and pick up a few wins before heading to San Francisco.

Well they were swept by the Cubs and are in danger of being swept by the Padres.

Pirates... you NEED to get back on track. A lot of positives have been achieved this year. Fans have shown up. There was excitement for a bit and even some optimism.

But guess what? The Steelers are practicing now. You know, the team that made it to the SUPER BOWL last year. The team that won the Damn Super Bowl a few years ago and a few years before that!

You have Pittsburgh's attention but PNC Park could be empty in September unless you start putting some W's on the board.

The Bucs are 4 games under .500 now.
They have 50 games left.

In order to go 82-80, a winning season to get the whole "longest streak of losing seasons in North American History" crap off their backs, they need to go 28-22 the rest of the way.

Not asking for the moon.
It starts tomorrow.
It's the freaking Padres.

Win a game.

Here's why I am rooting for the Packers today

I decided to root for the Packers today for a few reasons.

- Ben Roethlisberger seems like a jerk and the idea of his winning three Super Bowl rings is kind of crappy.

- Many of the Steelers already have a Super Bowl ring. For most of the Packers this is their first show.

- Aaron Rodgers winning will make him one of those "beloved forever" legends in Green Bay... you know, like Brett Favre.

- As I wrote before, I think Packer fans need to open their hearts up to Favre again. Having the Packers win a Super Bowl after his departure would go a long way in healing any wounds.

- I think a region with multiple teams should win at least one title every decade. For people in Wisconsin who root for the Brewers, Bucks and Packers, the wait has been since 1997 when the Packers beat the Patriots. 14 years is long enough. Using my "you don't follow a team until you are 7 years old" rule, there are kids who can legally buy a drink in Wisconsin without a memory of one of their pro teams winning. That's too long. Give them a reason to drink!

- Green Bay is called "Title Town." Unless you win some recent titles, that moniker is kind of sad.

- With the Steelers winning the Super Bowl in 2006 and 2009 and the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup in 2009, Pittsburgh fans have had their share of parades.

- As always I have a soft spot in my heart for the Pittsburgh Pirates because of my obsession with the 1979 World Series. If the Steelers win AGAIN then there will be no fan urgency for a Pirates contender for another decade!

In truth I want a good game. I'll be watching it with good friends and my kids and hope that it goes into Overtime.

But in the end, I want the Cheeseheads to prevail.

It will make the Green Bay winters go by much quicker for another generation at Title Town.

Don't ride around Dallas in a convertible!

Seriously, Packer Mobile. There is a bad precedent for that in Big D!

Speaking of that, I found this tourist photo op to be interesting.
Roethlisberger's head goes back... and to the left.

Back... and to the left.

(Too soon?)

Cub fans should be chanting LET'S GO STEELERS!!!!

I'm not sure who to root for in this year's Super Bowl.
Neither the Giants nor the Patriots are in it, so I have no emotion invested in the outcome and in all honesty I'm not that big of a football fan.

Chances are during the game I'm going to be thinking "I wonder where Adam Dunn is going to end up."
I want a close game. If the Cardinals win it... good for them. If the Steelers win it, Pittsburgh will go nuts, and good for them.

But Cub fans... you had better get a terrible towel and root hard for the Steelers.

If the Steelers don't win, you will be watching yet another "Never in my lifetime" title in your lifetime... all while the Cubs go into century two of waiting for a ring.

Right now the Cardinals have the second longest championship drought of a North American pro team at 60 years.
Now 60 years is a hell of a lot shorter than 100, but if the Cardinals win, the second longest would be the Indians who have been waiting since 1948.

Then you have the Lions, waiting since 1957. Hawks in basketball who have been waiting since 1958 and the Blackhawks who last won in 1961.

It's getting lonely at the top of the "championship futility" list I am sure. You've lost your two brothers in baseball when the Red and White Sox both won.

If the Cardinals win, you'd have only one more "Pre 1950" playoff drought for a team (the Indians.)

That can't be good.

You've GOT to be rooting for the Steelers.

Besides, I am sure some of you are still mad the Cardinals left Chicago!
