A. L. West... you blew it

Back in late June, I pointed out that the history of the Texas Rangers contain one gigantic summer swoon after another as the team melts in the heat.

I said that I wasn't buying them until they make it through the summer.

And guess what?
They had a bad August.

With today's loss (and Cliff Lee's latest meltdown... he had better turn it on in October or else he is costing himself millions of dollars!) the Rangers finished August 13-15.

Guess who else had a lousy August?

THE ENTIRE AMERICAN LEAGUE WEST!!!

Oakland finished 13-15.
The Angels finished 11-16.
Seattle, a non factor, wrapped up the month with a win to improve to 13-14.

The entire division finished below .500 for August. The Rangers started the month with an 8 1/2 game lead, played sub .500 ball and finished the month with an 8 1/2 game lead.

Had the A's or the Angels played winning ball this month, there might be a pennant race in the West. There might be a little suspense.

Instead we are all but certain to have a Division Series in Texas which, by the looks of things, will mean they would get whipped by the Rays or the Yankees... unless of course Cliff Lee turns things around.

Either way, the Rangers gave you an opening... and the rest of the division just stared at their toes.

I don't have a horse in the A. L. West race. I want it to be competitive.
With the A's folding and the Angels trading away their closer, it doesn't seem like it will be.

Thanks... thanks a lot.

DEAD TEAM WALKING

It's over. We all know it.
Heck, the Sox are even dealing away parts for the future.

Even John Tomase's article in the Herald points out that the team is acting like a defeated team for the first time all year.

The Red Sox put up a heck of a fight, but when you can't pick up a game on Tampa against the Orioles... it's a sign that maybe 2010 is a transition year.

I've felt it was a transition year most of the season. But you can't win a playoff spot when one team in your division is on pace to win 100 games, another is on pace to win 99 and your team has had around 20 key players on the disabled list.

It's tough to spark a line up when Ellsbury, Pedroia and Youkilis are all out at the same time.

Beckett actually pitched well again (which bodes well for 2011) but there's too much ground to make up in a month.

It will take a miracle.

And since miracles HAVE happened... I will dutifully keep the tally alive until the Sox have been eliminated (which the Tragic Number is now 24... either Dwight Evans or Manny Ramirez depending on who you ask.)

Good Luck Manny Delcarmen

Another member of a World Champion Red Sox team is gone.
And if I could salute Julio Lugo then I can damn sure salute Manny Delcarmen, who got traded to the Colorado Rockies (ironically the team he helped beat in the 2007 World Series.)

It may not have ended well in Boston, let's not forget what a wonderful Red Sox story his is.
He is a native Bostonian and "The Pride of Hyde Park" pitched at West Roxbury High School, dreaming of pitching for the Red Sox.

The Sox drafted him in the second round and in 2005 was called up to pitch for the Defending World Champs.

In 2007 he was up for good and contributing. With Papelbon and Okajima anchoring an All Star Bullpen, Delcarmen posted a 2.05 ERA over 44 relief innings. He kept the Angels off the board with 1 1/3 perfect innings in Game 2 of the Division Series that year (which ended on Manny Ramirez's walk off homer.)

He pitched in the clinching Game 4 of the World Series where he got to accomplish what so many kids in Boston had dreamed of and so few ACTUALLY have achieved:

He won a World Series ring as a player for the Red Sox.

He did it.
All of us who grew up in New England all wanted what he actually got done.

So while this year has been rocky and his season will end AS a Rockie, let me just say, from one life long Red Sox fan to another, thank you Manny Delcarmen for living out all of our dreams.

It was fun for us. I assume it was even more fun for you.

Cliff Lee's Trade is the Sequel to the Mark Langston trade

The Mariners went into the season with some optimism and some solid talent... but a slow start took them out of the race early and not even the presence of Ken Griffey Jr. could turn things around.

So Seattle took their left handed ace who was in his walk year and traded him off. It seemed like New York, looking for another October run, was the likely landing spot, but instead sent him to a team that had never won a pennant before and despite financial troubles was going all in.

The Mariners fell apart after the trade but some good solid talent came back giving them some optimism for the future.

Meanwhile the ace flourished at first, but then came back down to earth.

Which Mariners team am I talking about?
This year's team? Or the 1989 team?

Which left handed ace am I talking about?
Cliff Lee? Mark Langston?

In 1989 there was some optimism with the arrival of manager Jim Lefebvre and rookie Ken Griffey Jr. And a quick glance sees there was some talent on that team.

An infield of Jim Presley at third, Harold Reynolds at second and Alvin Davis at first is nothing to sneeze at. And oh yeah, they had a young shortstop named Omar Vizquel.

Griffey anchored the outfield that had Hac Man Leonard and a young Jay Buhner.

Plus pitchers who had some success in their careers like Billy Swift, Erik Hanson, Scott Bankhead and Mike Jackson were all on the staff.

But they fell into 5th place well behind the A's when it was clear that Mark Langston, their best pitcher and a legit #1 starter, wasn't coming back.

The Mets looked like the likely landing spot as they had tons of young pitching talent they seemed ready to move. (They ultimately would trade Rick Aguilera, Kevin Tapani and David West that summer to the Twins for Frank Viola... a move that helped clinch a World Series for Minnesota, not New York.)

Instead they found a partner with the Expos who were jammed packed with talent and had their eyes set on unseating the Mets.

Langston dominated the Padres in his first start, striking out 13 and giving up 1 earned run over 8 innings.

He began his Expos career with a 10-3 record and people declaring him the second coming of Steve Carlton. The Expos were in first by the All Star break and at the height of Langston's winning ways, the Expos built up a 3 1/2 game lead and remained in first place by themselves as late as August 4.

When Langston threw a complete game shutout on July 25th against Philadelphia, the Expos were riding a 6 game winning streak and matched their 3 1/2 game lead for the widest margin of the year.

Then the roof caved in.

The Expos lost 40 of their last 62 games. Langston lost 6 of his last 8 decisions and the Expos, who seemed to have everything in line to win the National League East for the first time in a non Strike Shortened season, finished the year at .500, 4th place and 12 games behind the Cubs.

Langston left Montreal for the Angels.
Meanwhile one of the players in the haul from Montreal became a more fearsome pitcher than Langston ever was... future Hall of Famer Randy Johnson who did indeed lead the Mariners to their first ever post season berths.

Which brings us to 2010.

The bookends of Ken Griffey's career has him see aces dealt from the Mariners.
Cliff Lee is sent not to the Yankees but to the Rangers, who like the Expos, are pushing their chips to the center of the table.

Like Langston, Lee came out smoking but has slowed down considerably.

Now with an 8 1/2 game lead heading into the last day of August, it is safe to say the Rangers aren't going away. But can Lee turn things around to help deliver a pennant?

And there seems to be little doubt that, like Langston in Quebec, his stay there is temporary.

I wonder who in the haul back be the future Hall of Famer? I've got my eye on you, Justin Smoak.

By the way... there's another part to this analogy of the Mariners dealing ace left handed starters.

Remember when the Mariners had to deal Randy Johnson when HE was facing free agency?

Once again they found an unlikely trading partner looking to finally win a pennant (The Astros)... the ace pitched well but fell short of a pennant (Johnson lost to the Padres twice in the Division Series)... and left town (to the Diamondbacks)... and the Mariners got back a nice haul (Freddy Garcia and Carlos Guillen were big parts of the 2000 and 2001 playoff teams.)

What I am saying is... the Mariners are good at this whole "trading a left handed ace away" thing.

Hey Ozzie... don't give Manny any ideas

Seriously, Ozzie Guillen, be careful what you say about Manny Ramirez.

I read your quotes in the AP article by Tom Withers, and some were a bit odd.

"I never see anyone on his team get mad at him because he goes about his business."

Um, did SOMEONE forget Manny Ramirez and Kevin Youkilis going at each other in the dugout in 2008?

But really, Ozzie... when regarding his manner of dressing and upkeep of his uniform, you said "That’s not my department. Guys can go out there buck naked, and if they win games for me, I’m happy."

Ohhhhh boy. You just opened a can of worms there.

This is a guy who took many leaks in the Green Monster, brings drinks up out to the outfield and wears his iPod in the field.

Showing up nude to the plate?

It's only a matter of time.

Giants fans... how do you describe this glass of water?

On the one hand, the Giants blew a beautifully pitched game by Jonathan Sanchez with a ball hit by Carlos Gonzalez that was played with all the grace and skill as one of the chases at the end of The Benny Hill Show.

They've lost 4 of 5 and the wheels seem to be coming off.

On the other hand, they haven't been LOSING much ground. The Padres are on a season high 5 game losing streak. San Diego seems to have been winning with smoke and mirrors all season. What if the law of averages are finally catching up to them? More talented teams have blown a 6 game lead in September. (Did someone page the 2007 Mets?)

Philadelphia is only up by 2 in the loss column for the Wild Card race and there are 30 games left in the Giants season to make up those 2 games.

And it always better to have your lousy stretch in August in September. Maybe the Giants can get it all together.

Go ahead, Giant fans. Describe the glass.

Really, A's?

Seriously... you put a 3 spot in the first inning on the Yankees with your best pitcher, Trevor Cahill on the hill, and you can't even hold the lead for ONE INNING?

You make a 10 game winner out of Javier Freaking Vazquez?

You call this being a spoiler and making a run at a winning season?

Seriously, A's... don't you know you serve at the pleasure of Red Sox fans?

There's just nothing to write about the Clemens case

I got a bunch of e mails asking what my take was on Clemens pleading not guilty today.

Here's what it is:

It's sad and EVERYONE on the planet Earth knows how this is going to end except Roger Clemens.

When Pete Rose comes across as a beacon of wisdom, you know we are heading towards a sad ending to... let's face it... a wonderful career.

What else can you say about this?

He's a big stubborn S.O.B.
That's what made him great and that's what's going to bring him down.

How is this going to end?
Christ, just watch Raging Bull.

(Spoiler alert!)

It isn't a happy movie.

(Although I would like to see Fat Rocket doing the speech into the mirror at the end.)

"Wait, Manny Ramirez was on the White Sox? When did THAT happen?"

That's something you are going to say in a few years when people are reviewing Manny's career for the Hall of Fame.
They will list his stats and you'll look at 2010 and see he played a handful of games for the White Sox... and you will say "Man, I have no memory of that."

Call this the easiest prediction I have ever made.

Hey Giants... there are no ugly wins. Only wins

How about THIS for looking at the glass as half full for the Giants?
This weekend, a three game series where Friday and Saturday's games were a gruesome house of horrors for the Giants that were done in the first inning... the Giants actually GAINED ground on the Padres!

Sure the Giants lost 2 out of 3 to a team that is on pace to lose 98 games...
But the Padres got swept! That's a whole game picked up!

And all pessimism aside, the Giants are STILL only 2 back in the loss column of the Phillies for a playoff spot.

SO BUCK UP GIANTS!
Yeah today's win isn't going to be available on iTunes as a classic ballgame... but there is no time for style points.

Just win games and make September meaningful.

Don't think of these as ugly wins.
Think of them as having a nice personality.

Hey John... I think it is over

Man, what a difference a few innings made for this weekend and in the end the whole damn season for the Red Sox.

The Sox had a lead in the 8th yesterday, Buchholz was dealing, the Rays bats were dead and it looked like the Sox were winning the series with a shot to sweep...

Next thing you know the Red Sox lost the series and are facing their last game of August on Tuesday looking at a week of games separating them from the post season.

At one point you kind of have to tip your cap and say "Maybe, just maybe we're not as good as the teams we are chasing."

The Red Sox are 10-17 against the Yankees and the Rays...
There's those 7 games in the loss column separating the Sox.

Makes sense.

I'm updating the tally... for how much more I am not sure.

Adam Wainwright continues to show his amazing generosity

Once again, Adam Wainwright could have taken all momentum of the Cy Young award, put it under his wing and make it his to lose.

Instead he lost his 3rd straight chance to win his 18th.
His ERA jumped from 2.18 to 2.30 and he only lasted 5 innings against the Nats and the Cardinals have fallen to 4 games back in the loss column.

Aces are supposed to face sub par teams and STOP losing streaks.

Instead Roy Halladay, Ubaldo Jimenez, Chris Carpenter and Tim Hudson are all still hanging around with Cy Young ambitions and you are keeping their hope alive.

Man... he is nice, isn't he?

But where was the HUMAN ELEMENT to Brian McCann's homer?

I am sure people who HATE instant replay in baseball were disgusted by what happened in Atlanta today.

Brian McCann hit a ball that was originally not ruled a homer.
It wasn't a walk off homer.

And then the umpires got together... and saw something.

The ball cleared the fence.

It turns out Brian McCann did indeed hit a walk off homer.

And guess what? The cameras caught it. And the umpires, who have a hard job trying to watch things in real time, used technology to make sure the call was RIGHT.

So McCann was able to be credited with what he did.

And the game ended the way it SHOULD have... with a walk off homer.

A team in a tight pennant race gets to win the game BECAUSE THEY DID!

And I'm sorry that it didn't have the "human element" that so many people cling to.

I know it hurts to know that the call was correct and there wasn't the arguing and debating that you think everyone loves to watch.

(Arguing that would have lasted as long as it took the umpires to check the tape and get the call right.)

I know a day like this is rough for people who hate the idea of instant replay.

I'll be sensitive.

Tony LaRussa should be trying to Restore the Cardinals to the Pennant race

Call me nuts, but maybe the time Tony LaRussa spent coming up with a speech for Glenn Beck's dopey little promotional stunt could have been used in a more productive manner:

Like how about a game plan against the Nationals.

You know when you are the prohibitive favorite to win the division with the best 1-2 punch in the rotation in all the National League and a guy who seems hell bent to win his third straight MVP and you are LOSING ground to the Reds and Phillies... maybe promoting a Fox News talk show shouldn't be priority one.

Oh yeah, the Nats won 14-5... the Cardinals pitchers are letting up an average of 9 runs a game to the Nationals.

Maybe they should have Glenn Beck write THAT on his chalk board.

Hey Giants... can you at least let fans get to their SEATS before you lose?

Seriously... the Giants were down 3-0 before they even came to bat on Friday.
Saturday? It was a 6-0 hole they dug themselves.

So people grabbing garlic fries or a Cha Cha Bowl hadn't even finished getting their napkins before the game was decided.

Can you at least put up a FIGHT?

It will be better for concessions if you aren't so quick to CONCEDE!

Tim Hudson says "PUT ME ON THE CADILLAC BOARD!"

Tim Hudson won today for the Braves... making him 7-2 in games after a Braves loss. Sounds like a losing streak stopper to me.

He won his 15th game today... sounds like a #1 starter to me.

He struck 13 while only walking 1 and letting up 1 run over 7 innings today... sounds like a stud to me.

His 2.24 ERA puts him at #3 in the league...and he ranks high in wins, WHIP and batting average against, all while doing it for a first place club.

Sounds like a Cy Young contender to me!

If Ubaldo Jimenez, Roy Halladay, Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter don't look out, this could be Hudson's Cy Young this year.

He does not need to PUT THE COFFEE DOWN!

There is a pulse... but oh man is it faint

At one point today, everything looked so great.

The Red Sox had a lead late in their game with Tampa.
And C.C. Sabathia was having a subpar outing.

Things were aligning. The Red Sox had a more than good chance of climbing to 3 1/2 games of both New York and Tampa Bay for the best record in baseball (4 back in the loss column) and the idea of a sweep in Tampa became real.

Then it happened.

Dan F---ing Johnson.

The guy who sunk the Red Sox division hopes in 2008 may have knocked out the Sox playoffs hopes in 2009.

Oh it isn't over... but with a loss tomorrow it will be damn close.

Let's update the tally.
