I am not expecting a pennant this year, but I don't want a season with center fielder CODY ROSS!!!!
 

A healthy way for Red Sox fans to view the 2012 season

OK, it is early in the season. But there is something so pure about how the Red Sox lost the first three games of the season that it actually is helpful and refreshing.

Remember last year? They had sky high expectations and started 0-6 and 2-10.
It was confusing.
It was perplexing.
It was unexpected.
And it haunted the Sox in September as they missed the post season by 2 swings.

This bad start?
Please, it is helpful.

How?
First of all it clear illustrates what is wrong with the Red Sox.
What happens when you go to see the doctor?
The doctor asks "What's the problem?"
You explain the problem and the doctor tries to help fix the problem.

That is EXACTLY what is happening with the Red Sox.
What seems to be the problem?
No starting pitcher is reliable other than Jon Lester, and even if the offense comes through, the bullpen stinks.

OK, then what is the solution?

I think for all Red Sox fans, we need to take a deep breath and remind ourselves 5 things.

1) There are 159 games left in the season.
2) The Tigers are actually one of the elite teams in the game.
3) The Red Sox are probably not going to make the playoffs.
4) That isn't necessarily a bad thing.
5) We ALL told everyone on the planet Earth that we just needed one World Series title before we died. We've had 2.

It is indeed a long season and who knows? The Red Sox could go on a nice winning streak. They could be getting the bad feelings out of the way early.

But guess what?
There might not be a quick fix.
Doctor's can't always prescribe a pill and sometimes surgery is needed.
Sometimes a natural healing process needs to happen.

And sometimes it is a good thing to have some pain in the body.
Pain tells us where the problem is.

And here is the Dr. Sully Diagnosis:

I've been saying this since Spring Training. The Red Sox are 8 players short of a pennant contender.
At least 2 starting pitchers... At least 2 Relief Pitchers... A Catcher... a Shortstop... A Rightfielder... And a Third Baseman for 2013 (Youkilis should become the full time DH after Ortiz's contract expires.)

There is no way that they will fill 8 this year.
But 4 isn't out of the question.

Imagine if the Red Sox develop 4 players this year.
Let's say that the Jose Iglesias becomes the starting shortstop and fields his position well.
And Ryan Lavarnway shows he can be a decent big league catcher.

And someone like third baseman Will Middlebrooks or reliever Alex Wilson or Junichi Tazawa (who is only 26 years old) can fill holes in the team.

If that happens (which isn't as unreasonable as asking a team to climb back from an 0-3 hole with Rivera on the mound), then the Red Sox will go into the 2013 season with Youkilis, Pedroia, Gonzalez, Lester, Ellsbury, depth up the middle and a slightly deeper pitching staff. Take Ortiz and Dice-K off the books and you fill the final 4 holes and BAM!

I see the 2013 Red Sox as legit pennant contenders.

That's a healthy way to look at the season!

Not as a rebuilding season... but as a healing process.

And don't give me the nonsense that "We can not accept anything less than a Championship team!"
Since when?
When did "Now I can die in peace" become "I need a miracle daily."

The sooner we accept that we aren't a playoff team the better. It will make this year a lot more fun to watch. It will be a recovery season where we see the new great Sox team rise from the ashes.

If they DO win it all, then great!
If they DO make the playoffs, then wow! It's a bonus.

But if they have their third straight third place finish, at least we can say "At least we are heading in the right direction."

Relax Sox fans.
Enjoy the season.

You are going to feel a little pinch.

 

For the AL MVP vote, it is Verlander over Ellsbury

If Dan Johnson and Nolan Reimold both struck out last night in the bottom of the 9th, the Red Sox would be in the playoffs.

And if they were in the playoffs, Jacoby Ellsbury, who led the American League in total bases, hit .321, had an OPS of .928 out of the lead off spot, had an OPS+ of 146, hit 32 homers, drove in 105 runs, stole 39 bases, had a 7.2 WAR and hit key homers down the stretch, would be the AL MVP.

But they are not in the playoffs. Dan Johnson and Nolan Reimold did NOT swing and miss.
And now it should go to Justin Verlander.

No one player had the impact that he did. The Tigers did not go on a prolonged losing streak after April. The Tigers had a solid bullpen and were consistent each month after April.

And the biggest reason is they knew every 5 days they had a win and the bullpen essentially had a night off. He won 13 of his last 15 starts including 12 in a row, giving the Tigers 7 or more innings in all but 2 of them.

Even the nights where he didn't have his best stuff, he made sure the bullpen wasn't taxed. And the line up didn't have to score a ton to pull out a win.

And he led the league in wins, winning percentage, starts, innings, strikeouts, ERA, ERA+, fewest hits for 9 innings and fewest baserunners over 9 innings.

And he threw a no hitter.

His value impacted the games before and after he pitched, so don't give me the nonsense that he only played in 34 games.

He also faced 969 batters.
Did any every day player have 969 plate appearances?

Didn't think so.

Give it to Verlander... although with two missed swings it would have been Ellsbury.

Garage Sales, extra innings and magic numbers

Today I missed the first game of the Red Sox and Yankee doubleheader.
I had a garage sale at my home. I felt that selling lots of crap was more important that watching the Red Sox inevitably lose to A. J. Burnett.

Of course they did.
It wasn't even a game.

Tonight turned into one of those classic days at the Sully house where I am trying to watch a critical game while getting stuff done at home. We're moving out of our home to another one in a week so tonight I was spent packing and packing. And also having lots of excuses to wander into the living room and catch an inning or two.

Now show of hands, Red Sox fans... How many of you thought the game was over after the Yankees went up 3-0 four batters into the game?

How many of you thought the Red Sox had no chance after Pedroia was tagged out after leap frogging Kevin Romine's son at home?

How many of you thought the game was over when the Yankees tied the game 4-4?

How many of you thought the game was over when Bard loaded the bases in the 9th?

How many of you thought the game was over after Papelbon was taken out of the game?

But it wasn't...
The Sox may not have clinched a playoff spot, but they are still ahead.

And I am, after a long long night and after tucking the kids into bed and making their lunch and standing among boxes, going to update the tally!

April 8 - 9-6 win against the Yankees. (The Sox end their 6 game losing streak with a slugfest. John Lackey stinks but Phil Hughes stinks even more.)
April 10 - 4-0 win against the Yankees. (Beckett and Sabathia duel in a game that was 1-0 until the late innings.)

May 9 - 2-1 win against the Twins. (A bullpen breakdown cost Beckett the decision but Cark Crawford ended the game with an 11th inning walk off hit.)
May 13 - 5-4 win in the Bronx. (Youkilis homers off of Joba and Bard and Papelbon make it more interesting than it needed to be.)
May 15 - 7-5 win in the Bronx. (Sox fall behind 4-1 but come back as Youk, Papi and Salty all homer.)
May 16 - 8-7 win against the Orioles. (Down 6-0 after 6 innings, the Sox rally and win it with a 2 run walk off double by Adrian Gonzalez)
May 18 - 1-0 win against Detroit. (With 2 outs in the 8th, Salty doubles home Crawford from first for the only run. Papelbon gets himself in and out of 9th inning trouble.)

And remember who DIDN'T panic!

Games like this give me NO pleasure

OK, two things pissed me off about the game last night.
(And when I say "The Game" I am referring to the Red Sox game.)

First of all the Red Sox fell behind 5-0 in the first. And I thought "OK, tonight's a blow out" and I watched "Tangled" with my wife and kids.

Then I find out the final score was 5-4!
In other words if the first inning was merely bad and not grotesque, then the Sox could have won the game.

So that's what got my teeth grinding.

But what REALLY got me mad was the play at home plate. The ump called Ellsbury safe for reasons unknown even though he was out. Then the call was reversed as well it should have been.

But guess what?
How much time was wasted on Wedge arguing, Hernandez arguing and Francona arguing and getting ejected?

If there was replay, not only would the call be correct but everyone could be shown the evidence.

But we can't have that. Calls being correct and people having information is bad for baseball... or something.

Ugh.

Sorry Mariners...

Seriously, I have nothing against you Mariners.

In fact most of the times I find myself rooting for the Mariners. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the Mariners, even before the arrival of Ken Griffey Jr.

And when Junior arrived, it was official. I almost ALWAYS rooted for Seattle.

And now they have Ichiro, who has become my wife's favorite player (mainly because she thinks he is a hottie.)

I would love to see them do well because I also think Felix Hernandez is a bad ass.

That being said, I am so glad their losing streak has extended to 14 games. The key to winning a division is to win games against teams you are supposed to beat. And I hate to say it Mariners, but the Red Sox are supposed to beat you.

Not pummel. Not embarrass. Just beat.
And a nice come from behind win (and Ellsbury ever growing MVP candidacy with a 2 out 2 strike 2 run go ahead hit in the 7th.)

April 20 - 5-3 win in Oakland. (Red Sox survive a lead off homer and two bases loaded situations and facing the tying run at the plate to win their first road game.)
April 21 - 4-2 win in Anaheim. (The Red Sox stranded 15 men on base and Josh Beckett's went 8 strong with no decision. But the Sox rallied in the 11th to win.)

The longest and stupidist Red Sox game I have ever seen

I actually thought the game wasn't going to end. I thought it was actually going to bleed into the game tomorrow afternoon and the two games would be concurrent.

The game started at 4PM West Coast time.
It JUST ended at 11:45 PM.

And oh yeah, somehow Marco Scutaro didn't score the tying run in one inning and was stupidly thrown out in the 12th inning when the ball was already in the infield.

Dice-K got the loss in a game where I am convinced he was in the hot tub reading a book for the first 10 innings.

Ervin Santana was throwing a no hitter and Josh Beckett was awesome until the heavens poured and took them out.

The Red Sox got some 9th inning heroics by Jacoby Ellsbury... all for nothing.

And someone named Trevor Bell threw 4 innings of shutout ball, the first three innings he was facing the winning run with every pitch.

But the stupidest thing of all?
