Last year I wrote a post where I had each most recent no hit game for each franchise. And with Francisco Liriano's gem tonight, that old post is now obsolete.

So dutifully, here is the updated list of each team's most recent no hitter.

Was it just me or did neither the Mets nor the Giants seemed interested in winning this game tonight?

The Giants get the go ahead run in scoring position in the 8th... Gotch.
The Mets get the go ahead run in scoring position in the 8th... nada.
The Giants load the bases in the 9th... zilch.
The Mets get a lead off double in the bottom of the 9th... zippo.

FINALLY it took a Huff homer in the 10th and even then Wilson lets the tying run aboard and had the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the 10th.

The World Champs throw Lincecum tomorrow and they'll be back at .500.
Maybe they'll play with some URGENCY tomorrow.

Hisanori Takahashi better be buying drinks after this game

Seriously, Hisanori Takahashi was a whole lot of suck for the Angels in the first two games of their series with the Red Sox.

Aces Jeff Weaver and Dan Haren got the losses, but they actually pitched well.
Jeff Weaver went 6 innings with 3 earned runs on Monday

Dan Haren was throwing a shutout today into the 6th and finished with 7+ innings, 4 runs, 8 strikeouts and no walks.

But Takahashi gave up 2 earned runs in 1/3 of an inning on Monday. Then today he let up 2 more homers and 3 earned runs in a single inning.

That's 5 earned runs in 1 1/3 innings of late relief. Two tight games that turned into blowouts. I am not even including 2 come from behind wins against two of the best pitchers in the AL on my Dodged Bullet/Teeth Grinder ledger because Takahashi made the games no brainers.

Seriously Takahashi. Pick up the tab at the bar.

Stay focused Pirates...

OK Pirates, we all know you guys have sucked since 1992.
And by sucked I mean posting a losing record for each of the last 18 seasons.
By sucked I mean 9 last places finishes over the last 18 seasons.
By sucked I mean 6 straight 94+ loss seasons including last year's 105 loss fiasco.

We all know that.
And only a lunatic would have picked the Pirates to win the NL Central. (Did anyone have them with a winning season?)

And here we are in May and already the Pirates are sub .500.

But wait!
The are only 2 games out of first place. And the two favorites for the division, the Reds and the Brewers, are not exactly tearing it up.

Let's say the Pirates win their next two games against San Diego (possible.)
And the Cardinals lose the next two games against the surging Marlins (possible.)

Then the Pirates would be above .500 and tied for first place in May.
Is that so hard?

And then play .500 ball the rest of the way... and get the whole "They haven't have a winning season since Francisco Cabrera" storyline off of their backs.

Is that so hard?

Stay focused.
I'm not asking you to be the 1927 Yankees (who beat the Pirates in the World Series.)
Just be above SUCK.

Heavenly

The Angels were my pre season pick to win the AL Pennant.
They seem like a damn good team.

And yet they are 0-5 against the Red Sox this year.

In Non Red Sox games they are 16-8.

Go figure. This one turned into a laugher and I can't put it into the Dodged Bullet category... even with Weaver pitching a Buchholz looking shaky at times.

The nice fat 6 run 7th took any doubt out of this one.

Next is Lester versus Haren... MY Cy Young pick versus a guy that a lot of other people picked.

I'd like to see my pick go DOWN.
We'll see. The Sox - Angels games have been heaven for me so far.

Hey Padres... wear these hats instead of the camouflage

I think it is good to honor the military after taking down Osama Bin Laden.
And the Padres are doing so by wearing their military camouflage uniforms, which I have already made clear that I am not a fan.

Why not the Red White and Blue hats?
It is a day for all Americans to feel at least a sense of justice and closure regarding that awful day. There will no doubt be flag waving, so why not have the flag waving on the field?

I am going to get grief for my old camouflage post

To honor the brave soldiers who took out Bin Laden at his hideout Mansion in Pakistan, the San Diego Padres will wear their special camouflage uniforms.

Last year I wrote a blog post where I trashed the uniforms. I took great pains at the beginning of the article to make it clear that I understood they were honoring the military and that I knew the Padres do a lot for the many locals who are in the armed forces. I just thought the uniforms were ugly.

I still do.

But despite my preamble, I still got people writing to me saying "Don't you understand that they are honoring the military?"

Yes. Yes I do.
I was considering taking down that post, but nope. It is up there.

I did go back and write a new disclaimer in bold and italics. I know it will be ignored.

If I take flak, I can handle it. I am not trying to pull a John Steigerwald and be the angry counter arguer.

I just think the uniforms are ugly.
But I am glad Bin Laden is gone. And the brave soldiers who took them out deserve our praise.

Now play ball.

Quite a night...

Well, call me crazy but the events of tonight have kind of distracted me from writing up my thoughts on the Indians latest win and the great game in Philadelphia.

It should be a night of reflection, some celebration, some sadness for those who are gone and some closure. I am feeling a little of all tonight.

I am sure I am not alone.

April is mercifully over.
If there was one Red Sox player who wanted it all done it was Carl Crawford who was miserable and the symbol of the futile first month.

Well the calendar page has turned and the Red Sox are 1-0 this month and Carl Crawford already has a 2 out 9th inning game winning hit.

A sign of things to come?
Oh let's hope so.

DODGED BULLET GAMES - 6

April 8 - 9-6 win against the Yankees. (The Sox end their 6 game losing streak with a slugfest. John Lackey stinks but Phil Hughes stinks even more.)
April 10 - 4-0 win against the Yankees. (Beckett and Sabathia duel in a game that was 1-0 until the late innings.)
April 20 - 5-3 win in Oakland. (Red Sox survive a lead off homer and two bases loaded situations and facing the tying run at the plate to win their first road game.)
April 21 - 4-2 win in Anaheim. (The Red Sox stranded 15 men on base and Josh Beckett's went 8 strong with no decision. But the Sox rallied in the 11th to win.)
April 22 - 4-3 win in Anaheim. (Peter Bourjos makes a 2 run errors and the Red Sox survive a bizarre passed ball by Jarrod Saltalamacchia that let a run scored from second.)
May 1 - 3-2 win against the Mariners. (Ichiro loses a ball in the sun that turns into a 9th inning triple for Lowrie. Crawford singles him home for the win.)

TEETH GRINDER GAMES - 10

April 1 - 9-5 loss in Texas. (The Sox tie Opening Day in the 8th with an Ortiz homer only to have Bard implode and the Sox let up 4 in the bottom of the 8th.)

April 5 - 3-1 loss in Cleveland. (The Sox drop their 4th straight as the bats are dead in Cleveland.)
April 7 - 1-0 loss in Cleveland. (Sox blow a great Lester performance on a squeeze bunt and Darnell McDonald overrunning the bag to end the game.)
April 12 - 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay. (A solid Lester performance is wasted as Kyle Farnsworth of all people shuts down the Sox.)
April 15 - 7-6 loss to Toronto. (Bobby Jenks implodes with a 4 run seventh inning as the Red Sox waste Pedroia and Youkilis homers and a clutch RBI double by Scuatro.
April 19 - 5-0 loss in Oakland. (Pedroia gets picke doff, the Sox bats go dead and waste a solid Lackey start.)
April 26 - 4-1 loss in Baltimore. (Buchholz pitches tentatively and the Sox let Kevin Gregg of all people to close out the 9th.)
April 27 - 5-4 loss in Baltimore. (The Sox tie the game with a 3 run 8th only to have Bard lose it in the bottom of the 8th.)
April 29 - 5-4 loss to Mariners. (Bobby Jenks blows a 7th inning lead, wasting 2 Mike Cameron homers.)
April 30 - 2-0 loss to Mariners. (The Sox strand 11 runnerss and let Milton Bradley double home the go ahead run.)

Matt Cain is on the mound for the Giants.
The Blue Jays and Yankees are going at it.

The Indians are looking to continue their winning ways into May.

The Red Sox game is starting as they try to avoid a sweep by Seattle.

Phillies play the Mets later tonight.




Meanwhile my San Jose Sharks are looking to go up 2-0 in their series against the Red Wings.








And the playoff series people have been drooling for, the Heat versus my Celtics, starts today. (And that's after Oklahoma City and Memphis square off THEIR Game 1.)






So which one am I watching?

None.

I am off to the beach with my family.
It's called priorities. It's a beautiful Sunday in California.

(But if the Celtics make it back to the NBA Finals and the Sharks play for the Stanley Cup, my butt is parked on the couch.)
