I think I figured out how they pick an All Star MVP

I think a few media members quickly get together at the end of the game and ask one question.
"Did anyone on the winning team hit a home run?"

If the answer is yes, then that person is the automatic MVP.

Pablo Sandoval hits the bases clearing triple that blows the game open early.
Matt Cain throws the two shutout innings that sets the tone for the National League's dominance.

But they give the award to Melky Cabrera because he hit a home run when the National League already had a comfortable lead?

Yeah.
That makes sense.

Those Giants sure PLAYED like All Stars

Remember how people were complaining about how the Giants had a pair of undeserving starters in the All Star Game?

Remember the criticism of the All Star selections and that Giant fans basically stuffed the ballot boxes?

And of course picking Matt Cain over R. A. Dickey was the baseball equivalent of kicking a stray dog for Met fans.

Well for all of the negative thoughts about the inclusion of many thoughts, they certainly showed their worth on the field.

Who got the hit that took the wind out of the American League's sails?

That would be Pablo Sandoval and his three run triple in the first off of Justin Verlander.

If you talked to a Met fan since the All Star voting results were announced, you would assume that Sandoval is famous only for his cute  nickname.

It turns out this Kung Fu panda has some skills.

Who got the win? That would be Cain with two shutout innings?

Yet neither won the MVP of the game. That would be Melky Cabrera, whose homer put the game out

Maybe Giant fans are smarter voters than we thought.

Either way, the 2012 All Star game was not to exciting, but it was a pretty amazing showcase for the Giants stars.

Their players are All Star worthy.

I think R. A. Dickey should win the NL Cy Young Award and is one of the best stories of the season.

It's the entire American League versus the entire National League

Seriously, HOW many All Stars are there?
83?
There are really more than 2 entire 25 man rosters of elite players?

When they all line up on the foul lines will they reach the foul poles and wrap back around?

Forget each team having one rep. Each team can have TWO reps and still have 22 more roster spots!

I have to double check to make sure I'M not supposed to go to Phoenix.

So Bud... I don't think you are going to run out of players this year.
But next year, see if you can have the All Star roster reach 100.

Start the season with the All-Star Game - My latest for The Hardball Times

In my latest for The Hardball Times I tiptoe into the realm of changing baseball tradition. It's a dangerous thing to do, but hear me out. The All Star Game should START the season.

Why?

The Red Sox non tendered Hideki Okajima the other day, thus ending his 4 year run in Boston. It was probably time. He had a mediocre 2010 and pitchers in their mid 30s tend to not improve over the years.

But before he goes off (and as a left handed reliever will inevitably find work) I ask my fellow Red Sox fans to tip their hats to him.

Remember this was the guy who was basically supposed to be Daisuke Matsusaka's caddy. A fellow countryman to keep the new ace company.

When he let up a homer to John Buck on the first pitch he ever threw, it looked like Okajima was Japanese for "Bust."

He didn't let up a run the rest of his outing... nor his next outing... nor the next one.
In fact he didn't let up a run in his next 20 outings.

And he had that bad ass delivery where he literally wasn't looking at the batter as he pitched. I have no clue how that worked... but it did.

His ERA was 0.42 in late May.
By the All Star break it was 0.82 and he was voted in by the fans (presumably by Red Sox Nation and the Nation of Japan) to the All Star Game.

As late as August 8th, his ERA remained sub 1.
Then his arm started to tire and the league caught up with him.

Theo and Tito rested him for a few weeks so he would be fresh for the playoffs... and he delivered.

He was unscored upon in the Division Series and ALCS, pitching 2 key innings in Game 7 against Cleveland.

Then, in the second game of the World Series, in a tense 2-1 victory, he pitched 2 1/3 perfect innings striking out 4.

He looked like a potential MVP candidate before letting up a homer in Denver. But he was a key player for the 2007 World Champs.

So off he goes to begin the journeyman part of his career. But thanks Oke-Doke. You combined with Papelbon in 2007 to give the Sox one of the best 1-2 bullpen punches in Red Sox history.

Filling out my All Star Ballot

It's that time of year again... time to fill out our All Star Ballots and give the power to the people.

And with that power comes the insane picks that made Jason Giambi an All Star starter despite being benched on his own team in 2004... or mediocre Red Sox second baseman Mark Loretta being voted in as a starter in 2006.

It is a wonderful theory to have fans vote in players, but often times they will either simply punch in players that play for THEIR team, players they recognize or people who have had good first halves of the season.

So the staff here at Sully Baseball decided to fill out three All Star Ballots with three different sets of Ballots. And each one will have a different criteria for why each player is getting at least one vote.

I filled them out at Dodger Stadium this weekend with a little help from my friend, the Emmy winning writer and comedian Dan Cronin.

BALLOT ONE: The Players I WANT To See Play Ballot

I believe the All Star Game should be filled with players who are having a good year and will be exciting to see. By that I mean a STAR. If the National League is throwing Tim Lincecum on the mound, I want him facing down a star American League player... not someone that an egg head with a calculator tells me has a higher VORP than the league average.

Yeah I know Derek Jeter isn't having his best season... I want to see him face Halladay, Jimenez and Santana.

Is that subjective? Sure... but it's my ballot. You don't like it, get your own.

NATIONAL LEAGUE:

Catcher - ROD BARAJAS, Mets
His 10 homers leads all big league catchers.

First Base - ALBERT PUJOLS, Cardinals
He's had a bad May, but when the season is over, he'll be in the MVP discussion.

Second Base - CHASE UTLEY, Phillies
10 homers, .307 average and a 1.016 OPS gets the nod over Dan Uggla.

Shortstop - HANLEY RAMIREZ, Marlins
Let's see some hustle out there, Hanley!

Third Base - RYAN ZIMMERMAN, Nationals
A lot of good third basemen to pick from, I'll go with Zimmerman because he's done it over a full season.

Left Fielder - RYAN BRAUN, Brewers
His .324 average, .928 OPS and 30 RBI are among the lone highlights of this Brewers season.

Center Fielder -MARLON BYRD, Cubs
A solid center fielder hitting with power and a good average. A good Cubs signing? What are the chances?

Right Fielder -JAYSON WERTH, Phillies
If Andre Ethier wasn't hurt, he'd get my vote. Heck, Ethier might win the MVP. But for now, the healthy Werth with his .327 average, 1.048 OPS and 9 homers gets the nod.

AMERICAN LEAGUE:

Cather - JOE MAUER, Twins
The defending AL MVP is earning his dough with a .346 average and a .911 OPS

First Base - JUSTIN MORNEAU, Twins
Morneau leads the AL in hitting, OPS and is only 3 homers away from the home run lead.

Second Base - ROBINSON CANO, Yankees
A .335 hitters with a .956 OPS and 9 homers, Cano is becoming the next Yankee superstar.

Shortstop - DEREK JETER, Yankees
His stats will be there when the season ends. Who would rather see? Jeter or Yuniesky Betancourt?

Third Base - EVAN LONGORIA, Rays
Calm down Yankee fans. Longoria is putting up better numbers than A-Rod. Besides, I'm starting Jeter and Cano!

Left Fielder - CARL CRAWFORD, Rays
Hitting .322 for a terrific team is a smart move on his walk year.

Center Fielder - VERNON WELLS, Blue Jays
The comeback player of the year? 11 homers already to go with a .944 OPS.

Right Fielder - ICHIRO SUZUKI, Mariners
His .352 average, second in the AL, is the lone bright spot for the Mariners this year.

Designated Hitter - VLADIMIR GUERRERO, Rangers
Think the angels could use 10 homers, a .339 average and a .927 OPS?

BALLOT TWO: The First Time All Star Ballot

For some players, going to the Midseason Classic is old hat. For everyone on THIS ballot, it is their first time going and a chance to finally have the title All Star attached to their name.

Some of these names surprised me that they weren't All Stars. But, according to Baseball Reference they weren't... and why would Baseball-Reference lie to me?

NATIONAL LEAGUE:

Catcher - ROD BARAJAS, Mets
Yup, he is on two of my ballots. A smart move by Omar Minaya.

First Base - JOEY VOTTO, Reds
Leads all qualifying NL first basemen in hitting and OPS and has 10 homers to boot.

Second Base - KELLY JOHNSON, Diamondbacks
How does this guy have 12 homers already? And why did the Braves give up on him?

Shortstop - STEPHEN DREW, Diamondbacks
A playoff hero in 2007, Drew is flirting with .300 as a regular.

Third Base - CASEY McGEHEE, Brewers
He leads the NL in RBI and is only one behind Miguel Cabrera for the best in baseball.

Left Fielder - JOSH WILLINGHAM, Nationals
Has some power and a flair for the dramatic. He also has a .929 OPS as well.

Center Fielder -MARLON BYRD, Cubs
Like Barajas, is on both ballots. His signing slid under the radar last off season.

Right Fielder - JASON HEYWARD, Braves
Probably the first of many All Star selections.

AMERICAN LEAGUE:

Cather - JOHN BUCK, Blue Jays
The main piece in the Carlos Beltran trade is leading AL Catchers in homers... just not with the Royals!

First Base - KENDRY MORALES, Angels
I had to double check, but Morales is indeed an All Star virgin.

Second Base - TY WIGGINTON, Orioles
Not sure what position to put him in... but his 13 homers and .960 OPS deserves a spot on the team.

Shortstop - ELVIS ANDRUS, Rangers
Think the Braves are regretting the Mark Teixera trade?

Third Base - ADRIAN BELTRE, Red Sox
Nope, Beltre has never been an All Star before. His .335 average merits a spot now.

Left Fielder - SHIN-SOO CHOO, Indians
Think the Mariners could use his left handed swing with power now? Cleveland is happy to have him.

Center Fielder - AUSTIN JACKSON, Tigers
With Granderson hurt and Jackson hitting, not a lot of people are complaining about that trade now!

Right Fielder - JOSE BAUTISTA, Blue Jays
Did you know he was currently tied with Paul Konerko for most homers in the big leagues?

Designated Hitter - JOSE GUILLEN, Royals
Surprisingly, Guillen, with his 11 homers and 31 RBI, would be a first time All Star as well.

BALLOT THREE: The Anti All Star Ballot

The final ballot I like to call my "Sanjaya Ballot." Basically I am trying to find the absolute worst combination of players. Inevitably you will see there are players on the All Star Ballot who are barely even playing. They don't have a crystal ball handy when they make up the ballots so they don't know who is going to get hurt, stink up the joint or need psychiatric treatment.

So I found what I think is the best combination of players who are either off to awful starts, are hurt or got cut from their teams... and seeing one or two of these guys get elected might prompt baseball to reconsider the whole "Let Fans Vote" thing.

NATIONAL LEAGUE:

Cather - J. R. TOWLES, Astros
He has only 9 hits all year and he is hitting .191 with no power. But he DOES have 8 RBI... a pretty good hit to RBI ratio!

First Base - JEFF CLEMENT, Pirates
The Pirates thought they were getting a solid bat from Seattle, not a .180 hitter with 6 extra base hits.

Second Base - KAZ MATSUI, Astros
Remember when he was going to be the next big Mets star? Now he is the the latest unemployed Astro.

Shortstop - TOMMY MANZELLA, Astros
Another sub .200 hitter in the Astros lineup. His OPS doesn't bust .500... and neither will the Astros!

Third Base - ARAMIS RAMIREZ, Cubs
He has a hurt thumb, which would account for the .160 average and sub .500 OPS. Another unmovable Cub.

Left Fielder - CARLOS LEE, Astros
Yup. Another Astro. $19 million should buy you better than a .196 average, 5 homers and a .325 slugging percentage.

Center Fielder - CARLOS BELTRAN, Mets
The face of the Mets hasn't played a game all year. He's not even healthy enough to not swing at an Adam Wainwright pitch.

Right Fielder - MARK DeROSA, Giants
He was supposed to bring offense and versatility to the Giants line up. Instead he brought a .194 average, no power and a trip to the DL.

AMERICAN LEAGUE:

Cather - GERALD LAIRD, Tigers
He was never an offensive powerhouse... but a .155 average? .237 slugging? Yikes!

First Base - CASEY KOTCHMAN, Mariners
He used to flirt with .300. Now he is hitting .196. But his 3 homers almost is tops with the MarinerS!

Second Base - BRIAN ROBERTS, Orioles
The One time legit All Star wasn't producing before an abdominal injury sidelined him.

Shortstop - ADAM EVERETT, Tigers
A .197 average and .258 slugging percentage an All Star does not make.

Third Base - BRANDON WOOD, Angels
The perennial prospect is hitting .156 with an OPS of .381.

Left Fielder - MILTON BRADLEY, Mariners
To the surprise of nobody, he hasn't produced. He at least has asked for help.

Center Fielder - GRADY SIZEMORE, Indians
He's a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger winner. But this year he's hitting .211 with a .560 OPS, no power and languishing on the disabled list.

Right Fielder - MATT LaPORTA, Indians
The the Brewers sell the Indians a bill of goods? They certainly didn't sell them the slugger they thought they were getting.

Designated Hitter - PAT BURRELL, Rays
The Burrell in Tampa Bay experiment ended with his release after only 16 homers over a year and 2 months.



There you have it. Three ballots... three different thought processes.

Vote often. Vote insanely.
It's the American Way!

A VICTORY FOR SMALL MARKET TEAMS... sort of

Lots of people lament during the off season that big market teams (the Yankees, the Red Sox and the Mets) sign all of the big free agents and small market teams like the A's can never retain their All Stars.

Well the times are a changin' again!

Happy Days are here again!

Didn't you hear? The Oakland A's reached deep into their pocket books and re-signed a 2 time All Star and kept one of their own in the fold!

That's right. Justin Duchscherer will remain an Oakland Athletic!

That makes up for losing Reggie Jackson, Jason Giambi, Johnny Damon and Miguel Tejada, doesn't it?

OK, hands up if you knew Duchscherer was a ONE TIME All Star, let alone two!
I am guessing not a lot of hands went up.

No player since Scott Cooper has taken advantage of the "Mike Sharperson Memorial All Star Award" better than Duchscherer.

If the All Star Game didn't have the insane (but wonderfully nutty) "Every team needs an All Star" rule, the only was Duchscherer would be at the All Star Game was if he had a friend with a ticket.

Lord knows none of his TEAMMATES would be at the game.

And oh yeah, the two time All Star missed ALL of 2009 with back problems and depression. So the only way Oakland can keep their All Stars is if they are broken down physically and chemically.

But lately A's fans can't really be picky.

With Duchscherer back, maybe I'll pick the A's again!

Maybe not.

I'm rooting for the National League... yeah, you read that right!

"But Sully," you say. "You are a Red Sox fan! How can you root against the American League?"

Because I don't really care. The last few All Star Games have been exciting and more often than not after making it determine home field advantage in the World Series, the game is entertaining.

But like in the World Baseball Classic, I am mainly going to be watching thinking "PLEASE NO RED SOX GET HURT!"

"But don't you want the American League to get the home field advantage? What if the Red Sox make it to the World Series?"

Ah yes... let's just say the Red Sox win the American League pennant. (And seeing they have the best record in the American League right now, it's not that crazy a prediction.)

Well then I want the Red Sox starting on the road. And let me tell you why?

When the Red Sox were in the 2004 and 2007 World Series, I had to deal with some of my fellow Red Sox fans going on about how much they wanted the Sox to win in Boston.

"Wouldn't it be better to win in Fenway?" One would ask.

"I want it to go six games so the celebration could be in front of the hometown fans." Someone else would say.

One dear friend of mine actually acted disappointed when the Red Sox won the 2007 World Series because, and I quote, "It doesn't feel as special on the road."

I asked this person "Then why didn't you root AGAINST the Red Sox in Game 4 and a Game 5?" Because that's exactly what you are doing when you blather on about how it isn't as special on the road.

Seriously, how greedy are we? After 8 decades of not having a title, we're now going to be picky about the locale?

I don't know about you, but I would like the Red Sox to go 162-0 and sweep through the playoffs. 

Didn't we learn anything from 1978? 1986? 2003? We can't dictate terms of how it ends!

Nor should we EVER act like it is in the bag.

Do you know who talked about how great it would be to win at home? Yankee fans in 2004. I was there in Game 6 and there were Yankee fans, fresh off of the Roberts steal and back to back Papi walk offs, saying "It's better to end in the Bronx and be able to stick it to Schilling twice!"

One bloody sock and A-Rod slap later, those Yankee fans were thinking "It would have been nice to win in Boston."

So as a Red Sox fan, I want them to get back to the World Series... and I want them to sweep. I want 4 blow outs. I want the lop sided 2004 trampling of the Cardinals look like a nailbiter in comparison. 

And then all of those twits who are more concerned with the celebration than the victory can all say "Ooo... I hope the Red Sox sweep so they can celebrate in Boston!"

So GO NL! Unite Red Sox fans!

So I supposed I'm expected to talk about the All Star Game?

Is it over?

It was the greatest All Star Game of all time... at least in my lifetime.
But man Fox had a great close up of Bud Selig around the 13th inning where he was clearly thinking "Oh Christ, don't be a tie!"

The game was more reason for me heading the J. D. Drew Fan Club.

I've got a lot to say, but right now... I'm just pooped.

Varitek an All Star?

I had a few people write to me regarding the Mike Sharperson Award.

I gave the prize, given to the player who is on the roster only because each team needs a rep and will inevitably make people at home say "WHO?" to Nate McLouth.

Mainly people said I was being a homer and ignoring Jason Varitek's selection to the team.

Let me say that first of all he isn't Sharperson eligible.
People HAVE heard of him and clearly has had All Star years in the past.

That being said, the only way that Jason Varitek should be at the 2008 All Star Game is if he buys a ticket.
I love the captain and will give him standing ovations from here to the end of time (which will be indicated by a Cleveland Championship).

But he's been such an automatic out this year that sometimes I wonder if the Sox should bring back Doug Mirabelli for his bat!

This is clearly a reputation selection and a respect selection rather than honoring the production of someone currently batting sub .220.

Plus there is no shortage of Red Sox this year at the All Star Game...
Papi, Papelbon, Drew, Pedroia, Youk, Manny... Christ I think Marty Barrett will be there too!

But how does Varitek get the call over A.J. Pierzynski?
Jorge Posada?

Hell, Kevin Cash!

Oh well, the bizarre selections are as much a part of this game as the snubs.
Starting next year I will hand out not only the Sharperson Award but also the Varitek Award.

How's about that, dear readers?

THE MIKE SHARPERSON MEMORIAL ALL STAR AWARD

There is a rule in selecting All Stars for the once relevant Mid Season Classic that says each team needs to be represented.

This rule is of course insane because sometimes a team simply doesn't have an All Star worthy player... but it also means that every year there is a player that has no business playing in an All Star Game that gets to make the trip.

I am naming this honor after the late Mike Sharperson, the lone representative of the 1992 Los Angeles Dodgers.

That team, that lost 99 games, had a lot of familiar All Star names (Darryl Strawberry, Eric Davis, Orel Hershiser, Brett Butler, Tom Candiotti, Jay Howell, Juan Samuel, Mike Scoscia, John Candelaria) but Sharperson, who batted .300 in 128 games got to make the trip to San Diego for the All Star Game.

He came into the game in the 8th inning, and struck out in the 9th against Dennis Eckersley.

He was basically a utility infielder starting 33 games at second and 39 games at third. The rest of the time he was a pinch hitter.

That's right, the Dodgers lone rep for the All Star game was a bench player.

Some people think MLB needs to change this rule because it is silly to see the Robert Ficks, Randy Winns and Mark Redmans of the world supposedly representing the best of the best.

But I like it.
It's a funny quirk that to me allows us that inevitable moment where you shriek "[INSERT MEDIOCRE PLAYER NAME HERE] is an All Star?"

This year there is no glaring Sharperson candidate.

The Finalists would be

NATE McLOUTH of the Pirates.
BRIAN WILSON of the Giants.

I'd probably have to go with McLouth.

The official award will be handed out on the eve of the All Star Game.
I'm sure they will be thrilled.

I just can't wait to see the parade in New York where greats like Frank Robinson and Yogi Berra will be waving to the crowd along with A-Rod, Manny and Pujols.

How many people will be screaming "OH MY GOD!!! NATE McLOUTH!!!"?
