They blew an early 4-0 lead. They kept hitting into routine double plays and they couldn't score after the third inning, letting Toronto hang around trailing by a single run after the 5th.
But the Blue Jays can play the "No after you... I insist after you" game.
Some rancid defense, a bases loaded walk and a truly rotten start by Brandon Morrow made this a dodged bullet in the truest sense of the term.
And if the Angels can pull this one out tonight against Tampa (they are currently tied in the 9th) then the Sox would have gained a game on the Rays, Yankees AND Blue Jays.
It's never too early to gaze at the standings.
