Red Sox fans... have you detected a pattern with this team yet?

Earlier this season, I wrote an article for Bleacher Report where I urged the Red Sox to deal Josh Beckett. He was pitching well at the time and I felt that he could get a decent minor leaguer in return. The Red Sox were not contenders, I argued, and they should try to flip some of their veterans for pieces that could help from 2013 on.

People wrote to me saying I was crazy for waving the white flag on the season.

I asked them if they thought the Red Sox were contenders.
They said that they did and consistently pointed to how close they were in the standings and how the team would improve when they get healthy.

Meanwhile the Red Sox have been very consistent all year. And it is the kind of consistency that keeps teams out of the playoffs.

All year they have had two settings: Lose a bunch in a row and look incompetent. Win a bunch of series in a row and look like a pennant contender turning it around.

They start the season 4-10 with the embarrassing Yankee series, then rattle of six straight wins and look like a contender.

Then they went on a 2-9 stretch and looked awful. Then they won five in a row and looked great again. They won five of six in early June to climb over .500. Then lost seven of eight to fall below .500. They went on a five game winning streak in mid June. Now they just got swept by the A's.

It is the morning of July 5th and they are 2 games over .500.

This is not a contender.
This is a streaky team.

This is an 83-85 win team.

Just enjoy the winning streaks when they happen and remove any post season hopes for this team.

Detect these patterns. Don't go too crazy when they win and don't get too upset when they lose.

That is the nature of this team.
Lower your expectations and this season will be pretty fun.

This run by the Giants is great but...

This 7 game winning streak by the Giants is cool and will make the Showtime show more exciting at the end.

But, as I wrote in August, the Giants losses to the Pirates and Astros and Padres and Cubs are coming back to haunt them.

If they won just one more game against each of them, they would be ONE game out of first place instead of five.

This is exciting... it should be heart stopping.

8 more wins for Wakefield?

Oh it wasn't pretty today. But when is it EVER pretty with Tim Wakefield?
Today was a no brainer for the Sox, even after Wakes spotting Seattle 2 runs in the first. A nice 17 hit, 12 run attack. A solid sweep of Seattle before the Royals come to town.

A nice 3 game lead over the Yankees and a 16-3 July record (including 7 out of 9 since the All Star Break.)

Meanwhile Wakefield is now just 7 wins behind Roger Clemens and Cy Young. He could get 2 wins in August and 2 in September... that's not exactly outlandish.

Then he would need just 4 wins in all of 2012 to have more wins than any pitcher in Red Sox history.

Odd. Maybe THAT's what the Mayans foresaw!

What 6 game losing streak?

Was the 6 game losing streak to start the season a bad dream?
Either way, the Red Sox have had a 7 and now an 8 game WINNING streak to balance it out.

Today was no teeth grinder nor dodged bullet. Any 9 inning game where an infielder is pitching the last inning isn't a down to the wire affair.

What I DO know is the Red Sox are on a 9 game road trip. It's a doozy. It goes to the Bronx, Toronto and Tampa.

On a trip like that, you try to come out with more wins than losses and take your chances at home.

As of now, the Red Sox are 4-0 on the trip.
Not bad for a team that had a losing record as recently as May 14.

Keep on winning.
Only good things can happen when you win... like lowering the Magic Number.

The Magic Number... is 98

I have an idea for the Rockies next year

When next season starts, hire a hypnotist to convince the team that it is already September.

And when April ends, tell them May is September.

If they can play all year the way they've played in September 3 of the last 4 years, they would make the 1927 Yankees look like chumps.

They might clinch the Division by the Fourth of July.
Or as they would call it "The Fourth of September."

10 in a row?
Folks they are 2 games back in the loss column of San Diego... and the Padres come into Colorado tomorrow.

They might not lose again. It IS September.

The 500+ Club

As August is starting to wind down, it is becoming clear which teams are contenders and which teams are just playing out the string.

But for those teams that are logging in time before the end of the season, there can still be some significant goals to reach.

One goal is reaching the 500+ club. In other words finishing the season above .500 and calling it a winning year.

Some of those teams can declare a winning season a positive step forward.
Some other teams need to finish above .500 to avoid humiliation.

Now two teams that could look at joining the 500+ club as a huge positive step have bigger fish to fry.

The Cincinnati Reds need to win just 13 of their last 42 games to clinch their first winning season since 2000.

And the San Diego Padres, expected by most experts to be one of the worst teams in all of baseball, can go 10-33 the rest of the way and finish above .500.

But those two teams are also the Division Leaders and have images of home field advantage through the World Series dancing in their heads.

However there are other teams that should be looking at the 500+ Club as a goal to build on in 2011.

They are...

COLORADO ROCKIES

Current Record: 62-57
Record needed to finish above .500: 20-23

It looked like the Rockies were going to be the team to take advantage of the Dodgers divorce woes and make the playoffs for the third time in 4 years. It was clear that SOMEONE else was winning the West. If you said you picked the Padres, then I am calling you a liar. But the Rockies are filled with talent and should make another run in 2011. Finish with a winning record in back to back seasons for the first time since the Blake Street Bombers days and work from there.

DETROIT TIGERS

Current Record: 58-63
Record needed to finish above .500: 24-17

Jim Leyland is a great manager but he hasn't been a great finisher in Detroit. In 2006, they dropped their last series to let the Twins catch them for the Division Title. In 2007 they had the best record in baseball in July and couldn't win a game in August and early September letting the Indians clinch. And last year they collapsed down the stretch letting the Twins beat them (again!) this time in a one game playoff. They are falling apart again and becoming an American League punching bag. They need to finish above .500 for Jim Leyland's legacy and also to help Miguel Cabrera's MVP candidacy. (You can just hear the writers saying "How can I vote for a guy who played on a losing team?")

Current Record: 59-60
Record needed to finish above .500: 23-20

The poster children for low budget baseball, the Marlins are actually going for their third straight winning season. In fact if they finish above .500 this year, they will have winning seasons in 6 of their last 8 years. And one of those losing years, 2006, the Marlins 78-84 record was good enough to win Joe Girardi the Manager of the Year award. Another winning season could help lure a solid manager to Miami. Their job would not be rebuild but take an already winning team up a notch (and into a new ballpark in 2012.)

LOS ANGELES ANGELS OF ANAHEIM

Current Record: 60-61
Record needed to finish above .500: 22-19

They have won 5 of the last 6 Division Titles and a few years ago were a 100 win team with their eyes on the World Series. This year? They can't contend even with the Rangers having a shaky August (an annual occurance.) The playoffs may be out of the question, but one of the best organizations in baseball shouldn't put a sub .500 product on the field!

LOS ANGELES DODGERS

Current Record: 61-60
Record Needed to finish above .500: 21-20

The Joe Torre era was supposed to restore Dodger glory and win a few pennants and maybe even a World Series title. Instead it will probably end this year with a disappointing injury plagued season and a roster hampered by the nasty McCourt divorce. While Torre will probably leave after this year, he shouldn't go with a sub .500 team. There is still too much talent between Kershaw and Ethier and the like to be a LOSING team. They will be one soon enough.

MILWAUKEE BREWERS

Current Record: 57-64
Record Needed to finish above .500: 25-16

This was supposed to be a big year for Milwaukee. Instead it has been a stumbling block where they couldn't take advantage of a weak NL Central the way the Reds and Cardinals did. Could a big finish and a winning year (which would be their 3rd in 4 years) be able to keep Prince Fielder? Probably not, but wouldn't it be fun to find out?

NEW YORK METS

Current Record: 60-60
Record needed to finish above .500: 22-20

What has gone RIGHT for the Mets since they blew the 2007 Eastern Division title? I'm at a loss. They have an obscenely big payroll and yet they constantly make headlines for all the wrong reasons. But believe it or not, a 82-80 record would be a 12 game improvement from 2009 when they lost 92 games. Joining the 500+ club might not get many casual New York fans to forsake the Yankees... but it is a start.

OAKLAND A'S

Current Record: 59-60
Record needed to finish above .500: 23-20

I drank the Kool Aid on the A's big time last year. This year they clearly were rebuilding and had pockets of playing solid baseball. A winning season with their young pitching would be a nice boost into 2011.

TORONTO BLUE JAYS

Current Record: 63-57
Record needed to finish above .500: 19-23

This was supposed to be a disaster of a season after dealing Roy Halladay. Instead the Blue Jays have been better than expected, Vernon Wells had a rebound in his career and they could finish the season with young pitching talent and a winning record (and Ricky Romero's contract extension) could have Toronto thinking they could do what Tampa did and take on the big boys.

Hey it may not be a parade in October... but finishing the season as a winner gives at least a silver lining for a season.

No, I didn't put the Pirates on here. I really don't see them running the table.

19-4

On the surface, not much has changed.

The Rays still have the best record in baseball.

The Red Sox still trail both the Rays and the Yankees (although they leap frogged Toronto into third place.)

And yet a lot has changed.

They looked like a dead from the neck up team in Detroit a few weekends ago and started a 10 game stretch against the Yankees, Twins, Phillies and Rays. And only the two games against Minnesota were at home.

It was a stretch that essentially could have buried the Red Sox.
And it began with a "Oh boy, I guess the season IS over" Papelbon meltdown in the Bronx.

Their record, including the Papelbon bed wetting, over those 10 games?

8-2.

They faced some of the best teams in the game and out hit them (they scored 5 or more runs 7 times in that stretch) and out pitched them.

In their current 5 game winning streak, the average Red Sox start has been roughly 7 innings and 1 earned run... against the best team in the NL and the AL.

Not much has changed except the Red Sox outscored the best team in baseball 19-4 on their own turf.

Notice has been served.

The Red Sox are waking up... you should have buried them when you had the chance!

Wait! The Padres have won 8 in a row? REALLY?

I literally had no idea until I checked Yahoo Sports and saw that they won #8 today against Cincinnati.

I knew they won a few games recently, mainly because they beat the Giants in some heart breakers. One of them resulted in an e mail from my dad that had the subject headline "I'm going to kill myself."

But I had no idea they ran off more than a week of wins.

The Padres? One of only 4 teams I gave no shot to in my season preview?

Now of course the Padres could very easily rattle off 8 losses in a row as well.

Chances are I'll miss that too!

I officially can't figure out the Marlins

Seriously... what kind of team is this?
On April 19th, they were 11-1.

On May 23, they were 6 games UNDER .500.

They beat up the Nationals all year... until this month where they were swept by the worst team in baseball.

Their season was done.

They go into Philly, and sweep the World Champions and are now only 4 games out of first as of this writing have the lead against Houston.

Is this a team that is going to sneak into the playoffs? Or is this a .500 team that can get on a roll?

I have no clue. But man isn't it interesting knowing that they can dismantle the team AGAIN and still put a winner on the field?

Maybe they can give the Pirates some pointers on how to field a winner with no resources, no fans and no hope.

Wait a minute! Nobody told me the Nationals won 8 games in a row!

Seriously, did you know that?

And if you did know that, are you an employee of the Washington Nationals?

So while the Red Sox haven't been able to scratch a win out, the Nats of all teams can be beat!

Now it goes to show just how lousy the Nationals have been this year... they've won 8 games in a row and the next worst team in the NL, the Pirates have LOST 8 games. And yet the Pirates are still 5 1/2 games ahead of Washington.

That being said... I hope Washington wins the next two. I'd love to see one of the worst teams I have EVER seen pull of a 10 game win streak!

A Phoenix in Oakland

On Wednesday, I said the A's were beginning their great turnaround.

Have you noticed the A's haven't lost since?

Have you noticed that the Rangers are in danger of losing back to back series, giving the A's a shot to gain some ground?

Have you noticed the Angels and the Mariners haven't exactly been world beaters?

Have you noticed the A's are only 7 games back of Texas in the loss column?

Probably not.

But I did.

I'm telling you, my prediction wasn't so terrible!

I guess Jake Peavy knew something that we didn't!

I thought it was odd when Jake Peavy rejected the trade to the White Sox.

He had a chance to leave a team that seemed destined to be a non contender and go to a defending Division Champ playing in a totally winnable division.

But I thought "Hey, he'd be leaving a ballpark that pads his stats to go to a launching pad and face the DH."

Then I thought "He'd be leaving the only organization he ever knew."

And I also thought "He's a married man with kids, and San Diego is a much nicer place in the summer than Chicago." That is not a knock against Chicago. I love Chicago. How many "Transplanted San Diegans" do you know?

And I remember he's making $6 million a year.

And he's 11 wins away from passing the late Eric Show as the all time wins leader in San Diego Padres history.

Guess what? There's another factor:

THE PADRES SUDDENLY CAN'T LOSE!

They followed up a 6 game losing streak that got the front office thinking fire sale and no doubt got manager Bud Black updating his resume with a 10 game winning streak!

Including the amazing comeback from a 7-1 deficit in yesterday's game.

Suddenly the White Sox are sub .500 and the Padres have a winning record.

And while the Dodgers are running away with the West, the Padres are only 3 games behind Wild Card leading St. Louis.

And none of the teams ahead of the Padres (the Cardinals, the Reds, the Mets and the Braves) exactly look like the 1927 Yankees.

What I am saying is Peavy might as well stay put.

Maybe the Padres will make a deal to improve their team.

Maybe they'll deal with the White Sox!
